Ranking The Super Bowl’s Black Southern Beaux

Sunday marks the 51st Super Bowl for the NFL. The South has given birth to the very best players in the NFL. While the Patriot’s are going for its 9th Super Bowl, the Atlanta Falcons are coming to the big dance for just the second time. Both rosters are packed with Black Southern Beaux. We rank the top three black athletes for each team and their expected impact on the game.

  1. Martellus Bennett played football andbasketballat Alief Taylor High School in Houston, Texas. He was a three-year starter and two-time All-District and All-Greater Houston selection at tight end. The tight end position is one of Tom Brady’s favorite targets. He is also a great blocker. With Gronk out of the mix, Bennett is poised to have a major impact on the game. Bennett has also played for the New York Giants and Chicago Bears. He is the younger brother of Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett.
  1. Malcom Butler was born inVicksburg, Mississippi, and has four siblings. He graduated from Vicksburg High School in 2009. He was the Patriot’s savior against the Seattle Seahawks a couple of years ago by intercepting the ball on the goal line. He is the Patriot’s best defensive back and will have his hands full with Julio Jones.
  1. Vic Beasley attendedAdairsville High Schoolin Adairsville, Georgia, where he was a three-sport standout in football, basketball and track. He played as running back and linebacker for the Adairsville Tigers high school football team. Vic Beasley is a tremendous athlete, a pro bowler, and a force as a linebacker. He is the heart beat for Atlanta’s defense. The Falcons need him to play well if they have any hope of slowing down Brady.
  1. Blount was born December 5, 1986, inMadison, Florida, to Gary and Barbara Blount. He attended Taylor County High School in the small town ofPerry, Florida, where he was a two-sport star in both football and track. Blunt is the Patriots bruiser. He was one of the top scoring rushers in the league. He will try to impose his will on Atlanta’s defense. Look for him to try to run over and not around his defenders.
  1. Devonta Freeman attendedMiami Central High School in West Little River, Florida. He has rushed over 1,000 during this season. He shares time with Tavis Coleman, but Freeman leads this dynamic duo. Freeman stretches the field and is a fantastic option for Matt Ryan leaving the backfield. Don’t be surprised if he has a huge game this Sunday.
  1. Julio Jones was born in Foley, Alabama. He attendedFoley High Schoolin Foley, Alabama, where he played wide receiver and defensive end for the Foley Lions high school football team from 2004–2007. Julio is hands down the best wide receiver in the NFL. He can catch the deep ball and turn short passes into long gains with his physicality and speed. He commands so much attention he can change the game without even touching the ball. The Patriot’s will never lose sight of him, but it’s hard not to see Julio having a big day.

Everything a Black Southern Beau Should Know by 30

By the time you turn 30, your family, friends, and significant other expect you to know and do certain things. The big three zero represents the transition from pre-adulthood to real adulthood. With that in mind, below is a list of things that all Black Southern Beaux should know by 30 (if not earlier).

Change a Tire

It’s going to happen. You will be out with your wife, kids, friends, or lady you are trying to impress, and you run over a nail or hit a pothole. Whomever is in your car will expect you to know how to change a tire. Though you may have thought ahead and paid for Triple AAA or emergency roadside  assistance, your love ones or potential significant will lose faith in your ability to protect them if you are not able to change a tire. If you don’t know this basic life skill, view this youtube clibe ( and practice.

Fire a Rifle

If you are not a gun lover yourself, chances are someone in your family has a shotgun above the mantle or in the back seat of the pick-up. You need to be able to handle yourself during target practice or the boys hunting trip. Your little cousins will be the people coming to you for advice on shooting and other coming of age milestones simply because you know how to fire a weapon.

Make a Signature Dish

Whether you are bachelor, married, or just practicing, knowing how to make a meal people drool over is the skill that will separate you from the pack. And no pork and beans and hotdogs do not count. Tip – You can’t go wrong with a grilled or sauteed steak with an original marinade, baked potatoes, and a fresh salad.

Tie a Bow-Tie

Assuming you have the basics down and can tie a neck-tie, knowing how to tie a bow-tie is the quintessential symbol of a true southern gentleman. You can wear it year-round and always stand out from the crowd. It’s original, classic, and debonair. Check-out to learn.

Buy a Suit

At some point, you need to know how to buy a suit and what type of suit fits your body. While I’m fan of the modern suits from Suit Supply, Brooks Brothers has several fits that flatters every body for any southern occasion. If you are looking to up your game, check out tips from the Debener for the benefits of investing in a custom suit.

The south is made for cookouts, tailgates, and family reunions. To be a proper host, you have to know how to man the grill. Hamburgers and hotdogs just won’t cut it. Learn how to make some succulent bbq chicken, ribs, steak, and fish. Your guest will thank you for it.

Buy a Sophisticated Bottle of Wine

There is nothing better than drinking a glass of wine after a long day of work. It always pairs well with a meal or even a cigar. But by the time you hit 30, you really need to know the type of wine(s) you like that are not Barefoot, Yellow Tail, or Sutter Home (no offense). Check out one of my favorite wineries in MD here. Your family and friends will sure to be impressed.

I hope this was helpful. Please leave a comment if you have other tips for black southern beaux before they hit 30.

3 Things I Learned from being Married to a Black Southern Belle

While I have southern roots, my formative years took place in the north. Grizzly nights shoveling snow, drinking hot apple cider, and anxiously anticipating the few months of 75 plus degree weather covered my adolescent years. As I transitioned into adulthood, I met the love of my life. She just so happened to be a southern belle, reared below the Mason Dixon line. It was not a big deal to me that we were regionally different. However, She might as well be as be foreign woman to me. We were polar opposites but it was exactly what attracted me to her. But here is the low down scoop for any non-southerners guide to dating on black southern belle.

1. Drive – I never knew how much belles liked being driven around until I met one. When I was growing up, my parents equally split their time driving the our family. However, when I started dating a belle she wanted me to drive her absolutely everywhere and I soon learned there is no time acceptable for her to drive as long as I’m with her. You could have just gotten broken your leg playing ball and the doctor puts you in a cast. The belle will wheel you out the hospital, help you into the car, hand you the keys and say, “baby I hope you feel better. Drive us home and so I can fix us some dinner.” You drugged up on morphine like wtf.

2. Stationary – never ever ever have I thought that people cared about the quality of card until I met a belle. The quality of the stockcard, the words, the envelope, they all matter. For me, I always thought that if you went through the process of picking out a card, that’s all that mattered. Not true. The brand matters. And the quality matters. Put thought m into any card for you give her. She said will judge you even though you both know it’s just paper.

3. Embrace the small talk – southerners just like talking to strangers. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why someone who has no idea who you are or what you like or even know if you are sane, wants to talk to you about the random ish like the weather, how many miles you get per gallon, or ask you about the brand of your new lawnmower. In other parts of the country, strangers don’t talk unless there is a reason. But put on your friendly face and talk and wave to people who know absolutely nothing about you. She needs to know you can adapt to southern traditions.

So this is just a few tips for the non-southern gentleman to make head with the bsb of your dreams. More to come.
